The merge copies pages as they are and does not resize any of them. We tested one Letter file and one A4 file in a single merge: in the result, the Letter pages were still Letter and the A4 pages were still A4. The same goes for other sizes.
A worked example
Letter is 612 × 792 points (8.5 × 11 inches at 72 points per inch). A4 is 595 × 842 points (the metric size). Merge a 3-page Letter file, then a 2-page A4 file:
- Pages 1 to 3: 612 × 792 points.
- Pages 4 and 5: 595 × 842 points.
The A4 pages are 17 points narrower (612 - 595) and 50 points taller (842 - 792), about 6 mm narrower and 18 mm taller. Put the A4 file first and pages 1 and 2 are A4, pages 3 to 5 Letter.
Viewing and printing
The sizes are kept, but a viewer or printer may treat them differently. A viewer may scale pages to fit the window, or show one page narrower or taller than the next as you scroll. A printer set to fit to page scales each page to the paper; set to actual size, it may crop a page or leave margins. Check your print preview before printing everything.
If you need one size
This tool has no resize feature. To get one page size throughout, set the paper size in the program that made each file, export the files again, then merge.
What this does not do
It does not resize, scale, crop or rotate pages, or reorder pages inside a file; it orders whole files. Bookmarks, form fields and the document title may not carry over. More on what carries over.
